pblm

Now that we’re fully in to the school year, the trend of planning ahead and packing a lunch for the kids is starting to slip. For those first weeks everyone is diligent about preparing the night before and making sure everyone is ready to go first thing in the morning.

As October approaches, though, we slide in to bad habits of just grabbing and going as we sprint out the door at the last minute. Need an easy idea to prepare for lunch at the last minute? Witness the best. sandwich. ever.

Peanut Butter + Lettuce + Mayonnaise = Magic.

Better than a sugar sandwich (bread, butter and sugar) better than a ketchup sandwich (bread and ketchup) and narrowly ahead of jam and cheese (bread strawberry jam and a slice), the PBLM is the greatest sandwich in the history of the world.

The thick smoothness of the peanut butter, the crunch of the iceberg lettuce and the tang of the mayo are pure heaven.

Trust me on this one.

Or maybe you have a better best. sandwich. ever. And I’m not the only one, I mean 154 000 google results can’t be wrong.

The only problem with the sandwich is the PB. And It's a big problem for us. Liam loves PB, but he's not allowed any peanut products at daycare, in case other kids are allergic. Our neighbour's son goes to our local elementary school, and they have the same rule – no peanut-based products at school.

The (somewhat sad, but also hilarious) solution that Liam came up with? A plain bagel. With nothing on it. We don't know why, but he prefers that to honey, or jam, or cheese or anything.

Sorry, but the new gold standard is peanut butter, lettuce, and baconnaise.

Cmon Christopher.. you get the vegetables from lettuce, the grains from bread, the protein from peanut butter. You get some fats from the mayo and dairy when you wash it down with cold milk.

    Balanced, baby!

Admittedly, I have yet to try this on my toddler, this is just my own favourite creation from my childhood.

So, trying to balance out “but it's the best sandwich ever” against “you fed them WHAT for dinner!!??”….

Instead of peanut butter, you can buy a product called WowButter. It tastes just like peanut butter but is made from soy, so it is totally safe for schools. It even has a “sticker” that you can attatch to your child’s lunch so that the school knows it is made from Wowbutter and not peanut butter

Had to google and find this post after a cadre of philistines made gagging emoticons when I reminisced about PBLM. I’ve recently had to go gluten-free, and I was craving this so much, I finally rolled up the PB and mayo in the lettuce leaf and VOILA!
