Little Boxes Made of Ticky Tacky

I live in suburbia. Every house looks just the same. The Weeds theme song come to mind about the “little boxes made of ticky-tacky and they all look just the same.”

This is good and this is bad. Bad because, well, every house looks the same. I’d tell you mine is the ‘beige one,’ but they’re all beige. It’s good because when every house looks the same, stealing design ideas from your neighbours is easy!

Whenever a new listing of a house for sale is posted, my wife and I quickly scour the photos online to get ideas for arranging furniture, decorating, or renovating. And just as we get ideas for inside, we get ideas for outside too.

This works whether or not your houses ‘all look just the same’ or not, really. As spring springs and the wheels start turning on the projects you could get together for your garden and exterior decorating, walk around your neighbourhood and see what other people are doing.

I’ve gone and checked out driveway side gardens

driveway gardens

Backyard retaining walls and plastic garden boxes

backyard garden ideas

Sideyard flower beds.

Side yard garden box

All of those within half a dozen houses of my own, all interesting project ideas for my new season with the Scotts Gro Crew.

That last one is the one I like best. Okay, I really like the retaining wall garden the best, but that’s a little above my experience level. Maybe for Season 3 I can get that far. I mean last year was the first year I really got into yard design and gardening.

I built a raised garden bed for the first time, had a bountiful harvest of vegetables, and this year, in addition to switching up the mix of veg, I’m wanting to add some flower beds to the front yard. This in addition to continuing to work on my lawn’s bald patches, and getting the healthy parts thicker and greener.

It’s a big project, so I’m starting to get my supplies ready! Follow #IGrewIt on social to track my progress and others on the Scotts Gro Crew and to share yours too!

Scotts IGrewIt Supplies

I’ve got Scotts Turf Builder Green Max to get deep greening in 3 days, Scotts Coated Grass Seed to jumpstart growth on my lawn along with Scotts EZ Seed to quickly fill in the dead spots.

Miracle-Gro Moisture Control Potting Mix, Miracle-Gro Shake ‘n’ Feed will get my garden off to a good start. Scotts Outdoor Cleaner with Oxi Clean will help me polish up the furniture and decor to shine in the sun.

I’m starting growing some plants indoors with a seeding kit. We’re going to try some corn, different types of lettuce, beets, carrots, and onions this year.

Seeds

Those are my plans, you should take the next week or so to get out and wander your neighbourhood to see if you can find inspiration with the new season and follow along with my projects and advice from the Scotts Gro Crew experts.

Here’s a contest to get you ready to say #IGrewIt this summer too!

We usually have a pretty standard veggie garden but this year we are adding cauliflower, cabbage, parsnips, cucamelons and 6 kinds of squash. I’m also sprucing up and relocating a few flower beds as we are looking to sell in the next year!

#IGrewIt! I am trying to grow some Chinese carrots, chayote and goose berries for the first time in my garden. But I grew tomatoes of all sorts every year and shall continue to do so even though many times I have way too many and have to give many away to neighbors and friends.

Our condo finally agreed to take a crab apple tree down in my front yard. It makes such a mess in the fall and the roots and damaging my house. So that puts my front garden on hold until then. Once it’s gone I want to make a retaining wall and build up my garden. In the back I have an anti hill so i have to build a planter box and I am gonna try veggies for the first time.in my life
