Dinosaur Hunting In Alberta

[twitter]Most kids will be getting amped up for the release of Jurassic World on June 12 because dinosaurs. Kids + Dinosaurs = Win. It’s axiomatic.

My boys have extra reason to get excited about Jurassic World: they live in Alberta, home to some of the richest dinosaur fossil fields in the world.

In fact, Dinosaur Provincial Park is home to more Cretaceous period artifacts than anywhere on earth making it a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Cretaceous period was immediately following the Jurassic period. Last year when we went on our camping trip to Dinosaur Provincial Park, the boys brought along their dino costumes and we tried to answer why the dinosaurs died.

Actually, bringing along dino costumes is par for the course with my two. Just before Halloween one year, we headed out to Drumheller, Alberta with the outfits in tow. Drumheller is home to the Royal Tyrrell Museum which boasts more than 130 000 fossils. They made headlines this week after unveiling a triceratops family skull they have dubbed Hellboy (not pictured above ;)).

Fossils are so ubiquitous in our province that you can even find them in the cities as one man discovered when he went to renovate his basement and stumbled upon a 60M year old fish.

Everywhere you look in Alberta, fossils could be lurking. It’s easy to tell which is a fossil and which is rock by using the lick test. Your finger will kind of stick to the porous fossil if it’s legit, it will pull easily off a rock. So it’s lick, stone. Lick, stone. Lick, bone!

This week, Zacharie and Charlie have been thumbing through the books from #TeamJurassic Giveaway Number 1 to investigate the locals. From Albertosaurus to Edmontosaurus, not only are there unique dinosaurs to our area, but they also boast our place names!
