4 Silk Smoothie Secrets

[twitter]I’m back on the chain, gang. It’s summer, and I’m getting things up and running for Team Diabetes training. I know, I tried it last summer and failed miserably, but if you fall you need to get back up – right?

New to the arsenal for this year’s training camp is a wicked little single serving blender that dropped down our chimney over the holidays. So, with that tight little rocket ready to roll, I’ve gotten in to mixing some smoothies for breakfast. Drop in some flax oil and a scoop of protein powder with each whirl and we’re on our way for the day with a full balanced breakfast.

FOUR FRESH FRUIT TIPS FOR THE BEST SILK SMOOTHIE

1. As we are plowing in to the fresh fruit season, grab as much as you can and then freeze it. This is where the kids come in, get them to help you pick all the strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, peaches, they can this summer.

2. Instead of putting the fruit in the bags, place them evenly on cookie sheets first. Put the trays in the freezer, to freeze each fruit piece individually. This stops the fruit from clumping and makes it easier to scoop raspberries, blueberries, etc into your blender.

3. This goes for bananas too. Instead of freezing them whole, I cut them into halves and freeze them on cookie sheets before dropping into freezer bags. Perfect for when the store has the ‘too ripe to sit on the counter’ bananas out at the end of the week. Get a bunch, freeze them right away, and you’re good to go for later.

4. By using frozen fruit, you don’t need to add ice cubes, the frozen fruit helps to thicken up your smoothie without watering it down, giving it a bigger flavour punch.

BONUS SILK SMOOTHIE RECIPE:

I call this one “Daddy’s Hulk Juice”:

I stuff a handful of  baby spinach leaves (heads up: you can get spinach and kale bag mixes now for the super trendy types), a scoop of powder, half a frozen banana, and a cup to cup and a half of Silk in my blender and let it rip.  The smoothie is a gorgeous green colour that my kids find absolutely creepy. I offer them a sip, they always turn me down with a huge giggle and then groan as I take a big gulp!
