This is the year we finally got into skiing. After a few one off trips to ski hills with rental equipment, we made the plunge to buy the kids their own gear and get a seasons’ pass to a local hill so we could get out a couple of times a week.

We’ve hit that hill a bunch since it opened in November and the boys got their skills to a point where a weekend in the real mountains, staying in a ski in ski out alpine lodge could happen.

Just over 4 hours west of Calgary is Kimberley Alpine Resort, a great small town ski hill that’s going through a bit of a rebirth. When the local mine closed in 2000, the town went all in on tourism and it shows.

With long sweeping runs for skiers of varying ability, a great program of ski camps and lessons for kids, as well as guides offering free daily tours of the mountain, Kimberley is the perfect place to settle in for a weekend of family skiing.

Trickle Creek Lodge offers spacious suites with full kitchens, a separated bedroom, and a location that puts you a few dozen steps from the Kimberley Alpine Resort chairlift to start your day.

Zacharie strapped in a private lesson to finally learn how to ride his front side edge through a big S-turn, while Charlie tackled a blue run for the first time ever.

Achievements unlocked!

Skiing at a local hill has been a great way for us to discover a new sport together and spend time with a family. Now that the boys are getting good enough to handle a road trip to “real” mountains, it adds an entirely new world of weekend escapes and vacation opportunities for our family.
